Project Brief
Exploring and Enhancing the Social System in Tarwewijk, Rotterdam
Context: Tarwewijk, a neighborhood in the city of Rotterdam, has a diverse social fabric but faces challenges in fostering cohesive social interactions among its residents. As with many urban neighborhoods, the social structure in Tarwewijk is influenced by both physical and environmental factors such as housing density, public spaces, and the availability of green and blue systems (nature and water). While green and blue systems are important approaches to sustainable, resilient, and cost-efficient urban development, this portfolio shifts the focus towards and addresses the "social system" – the complex network of human interactions, behaviors, and relationships that shape a community.
Objective: This portfolio explores how spatial design can influence and improve social interaction in Tarwewijk by analyzing the existing social condition and proposing interventions. The goal is to identify spatial structures that either hinder or foster social connections and to design proposals that encourage stronger community bonds and interaction between residents.
Outcome: The portfolio will result in a set of spatial design proposals aimed at strengthening the social fabric of Tarwewijk by creating environments that support and promote social interaction. These proposals will serve as a blueprint for how urban design can be used to positively influence social systems, ultimately contributing to a more cohesive and vibrant community.
